Invisible Words Has Another Winner

From Donnell Bell, who coordinates this KOD offering: Over on KOD Invisible Words, we post a weekly improv exercise. The rules are simple: Finish the Sentence, combine Five Random Words, Work on one or both, but make the exercise your own. No more than two paragraphs. KOD Member Candy Gareiss, who writes as C.F. Francis, got to work on the Five Random words:

Alive

Corner

Indigent

Recognized

Sniper

And came up with this:

She rounded the corner then pressed her back against the graffiti-laden brick wall, gulping for air.  Had he seen her?  Followed her?  Or was he too busy making himself scarce?  Blood rushed to her ears while her lungs worked like bellows.  She had to calm down.  She was alive and she needed her wits to stay that way.

Why the hell had she come to this neighborhood today?  Her work with the indigent and homeless of the city wasn’t limited to this area.  When she found out a candidate for governor would be campaigning here today, she should have rearranged her week.  But no, she was too damn stubborn to let someone else screw with her schedule.  She could hear the sirens now but she didn’t dare run toward them. The authorities might believe she’d seen the sniper but no one would ever believe that she’d recognized the man who had pulled the trigger.  The city’s “champion of justice” was a cold-blooded killer—and she had no doubt that she’d be next if he found her.
