Title: Poisons for Authors: History & Culture, Physiology & Biochemistry
Instructor: Carol Potenza
Date and Time: April 26, 2025 9AM CT via Zoom
Level: Pre-published to Multi-book published writers/authors
Workshop Description: In mysteries, poison as a murder weapon inevitably leads to the same result—death. But how do poisons actually work within the human body? How similar are their
internal targets? And how does an author choose the perfect poison? Understanding the biochemistry of poisons can add layers to your crime narrative, so join me to explore this fascinating topic and avoid common cliches about those who use poisons to kill. Topics to be covered: poison & “human” prehistory, poison history & cultures, pois pros and cons, poison physiological delivery, choosing the perfect poison and poison biochemistry.
Instructor’s Bio: Carol Potenza is the award-winning author of Hearts of the Missing—Tony Hillerman Prize 2017; Spirit Daughters—Daphne du Maurier Mainstream Mystery/Suspense Winner, 2023, and Sting of Lies, a Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Finalist. Carol is a retired biochemist who loves the combination of strong women sleuths, paranormal and murder, mixed with science or, as she likes to call it—BiocheMystery. She sets all her books in the beautiful state of New Mexico, including her most recent releases—Ambushed: A De-Extinct Zoo Mystery, a murder mystery set in a zoo filled with genetically engineered Ice Age animals (think mammoths!), and soon to be published Echo of Lies, an action-packed historical mystery-science fiction set near Roswell, New Mexico. Carol lives in Las Cruces with her husband, Leos, and she hopes you enjoy this talk on the Poisons for Authors!
